“Obstacles are those frightful things you see when you take your eyes off your goal.” –Henry Ford

I procrastinate! Having set many goals throughout my life I have achieved only a few and have often wondered why this is the case. This has often led to regret and wondering where I would be now if only, I had achieved these goals which then starts a downward non-productive spiral. But regret is not helpful, so I started a journey to discover why I procrastinate and discovered some of the enemies of goal achievement.

The hard truth is that ultimately, we are our own worst enemy when it comes to reasons, we do not achieve our goals, but this can be further broken down into the following 7 deadly enemies of goal achievement.

“The only limit to the height of your achievements is the reach of your dreams and your willingness to work for them.”– Michelle Obama

Enemy 1 — Lack of Time

Or the perceived lack of time…we all have 24 hours in a day, but for a lot of people juggling work, family, friends, leisure, etc. can be tough. However, if something is important to you then you will make the time for it but be careful not to burn yourself out in the process.

Enemy 2 — Lack of Motivation

This comes down to not really knowing what you are aiming for…you cannot be motivated to achieve an unknown, so you need to be clear on what you want to achieve to defeat this enemy.

Enemy 3 — Lack of Persistence

Many people just go with the flow, they lack decisiveness and perseverance. They cannot get past difficulties and easily give up and turn away from their dreams.

Enemy 4 — Uncertainty

This speaks to the lack of motivation; People have the best intentions when setting goals but do not know what goals to set. These people just do not know what they want to get from this life. To them, their life is one big question mark!

Enemy 5 — Fear

This is a big one, they set a goal but then are afraid to fail and this leads to frustration which in turn leads to anger with themselves when they do not fulfil their goals. This Fear — Frustration — Anger becomes a continuous cycle preventing any goals from ever being achieved.

Enemy 6 — Laziness

Harsh but true, some people allow laziness to get in the way of their goals. They will set a goal but then will not make any effort to even try to achieve the goal.

Enemy 7 — Lack of Opportunity

I debated as to whether to include this, because some may argue that you make your own opportunities, but some people genuinely are deprived of opportunities to exhibit their talents and gifts. Often even the most aspiring people are driven away from their drams on account of opportunity factors.

I have definitely been guilty of allowing most, if not all, of these get in the way of achieving my goals at some point in the past but I am hoping that by listing them and acknowledging them I can use this knowledge to set better goals and not let any of these ‘enemies’ get in the way again.

I hope this also helps at least some of you to identify what might be getting in the way of your goals and to be able to use this knowledge to overcome the ‘enemies’ on your way to success.
